You know that managing your type 1 diabetes, or caring for someone else who has type 1 diabetes, is an important part of your daily life. But have you considered that the way you (or the person you care for) manage day-to-day life also affects diabetes care? It all comes down to stress. You know that it affects mood. But you may not realize that it can also affect diabetes self-management, and therefore blood sugar levels.

So, finding healthy ways to cope with stress is a big part of type 1 diabetes self-management. The links below were created with type 1 diabetes self-management and stress management in mind. Managing type 1 diabetes can be hard at times for even the most motivated person. And if you've grown up with type 1 diabetes, going from a pediatric care team to an adult care team can be hard. So can taking on full responsibility for one's own diabetes care. But with effort and commitment, you can get through the tough times. And, if you are a caregiver, you can also help the person you care for make these transitions.

Healthy coping with type 1 diabetes takes three main things:

  • Knowledge. Treat every day as a new chance to find out more about type 1 diabetes. There is a lot of information out there, but you don't need to learn it all at once! Learning about what you, or the person you care for, can do each day to help manage diabetes can lead to a lifetime of healthy living
  • Skill. Knowledge is power—but only if you know how to use it! And, if you are a caregiver, how to share it with the person you care for. Try out the coping and self-management tips you read about until you not only know them, but can live them. It takes time to turn what one knows into what one does, but skills can be developed, with time, practice, and patience
  • Support. Don't go it alone! Sometimes dealing with the challenges of managing type 1 diabetes takes a team effort. The support of family, friends, and members of a diabetes care team can make it easier to cope
